Sled Dogs Race Through Frigid Temperatures at Annual Beargrease Marathon

The 41st annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon kicked off on March 3, 2024, in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, drawing a crowd despite frigid temperatures. With the race starting line back at Billy’s, a local bar, the event showcased 22 marathon racers embarking on a challenging journey over 300 miles up the North Shore towards Two Harbors. Last year, the marathon had been relocated due to snow conditions, while the 2024 race was canceled entirely because of a lack of snow.

Race spokesperson and board president Mike Keyport noted the trail conditions. “It’s going to be a hard-packed trail, so I expect it to be a little bit faster, possibly,” he said. Participants and spectators alike expressed excitement for the event and the return to its traditional start.

Among the competitors was last year’s first-place winner, Erin Aili, from Ray, Minnesota. Aili expressed her eagerness to race again, stating, “It’s great to be back at the traditional start with all the spectators cheering.” She mentioned the dogs’ enthusiasm was palpable, evidenced by their wagging tails and lively behavior. Aili added that the cold weather was preferable to the warmer conditions of the previous year.

Fellow racer Mary England and her husband, Jesse Terry, traveled from Sioux Lookout, Canada, to participate. England highlighted the ideal sled dog weather, saying, “This is perfect sled dog weather.” The couple regularly competes in various races, drawn to the Beargrease Marathon for its vibrant atmosphere and community spirit.

New to the Beargrease this year, Anna Hennessy has a background racing in Alaska. Upon moving back to Minnesota, she eagerly trained for this event. “I’m just excited that so many people in Duluth show up to watch the dogs and cheer even when it’s this cold out,” she remarked.

The starting line was not only for the marathon but also for the 120-mile and 40-mile races. As marathon racers set off, Lucy Howe, a student from Michigan Tech, prepared for the 120-mile race. She acknowledged her nerves but felt confident based on her prior experiences.

The Freking family, known in the racing community, had members competing across all race lengths. Nicole Freking, aged 13, prepared for her 40-mile race, emphasizing the importance of training and planning for cold weather.

Despite the biting cold, spectators filled the starting area, cheering for the racers as they took off. Sam Homann, a returning fan, shared her enthusiasm for the event, recalling how a previous experience had sparked her love for sled dogs. “It’s just such a great atmosphere,” she noted.

Among the supporters, Pam Hermanson and her husband, Dave, traveled from Oregon to cheer for marathon racer Colleen Wallin. Hermanson, a devoted fan, expressed her excitement, stating, “She’s my absolute favorite. This is our vacation.”

The Beargrease Marathon continues to draw fans and participants alike, fostering a strong sense of community and passion for the sport despite the challenges posed by weather conditions. As the event unfolds, both racers and spectators are reminded of the enduring spirit of sled dog racing.
