Spencer Jones, the New York Yankees’ top outfield prospect, is transforming his swing by drawing inspiration from superstar Shohei Ohtani. This adjustment comes as the team prepares for the upcoming season, with Jones looking to refine his batting technique to better capitalize on his considerable potential.

During the off-season, Jones collaborated with his hitting coaches while analyzing his performance from the previous year. They used an iPad to review footage, identifying trends in his swings that led to missed opportunities at the plate. A key finding highlighted a timing issue; many of his misses occurred when his foot was still off the ground. Jones remarked, “A lot of my miss came when my foot was off the ground timing-wise,” emphasizing the importance of getting his foot down early in the swing.

Learning from the Elite

Standing at an impressive 6-foot-7, Jones began to model his swing after Ohtani, known for his effective toe-down approach. “The best guy with the toe-down swing is Ohtani,” Jones stated. “So it was just kind of looking at some of the moves that he does, lined up with some of the things that I’m trying to do.” This adaptation aims to enhance his timing and ultimately improve his performance as he prepares for a potential debut in Major League Baseball.

The initial results from spring training have been promising. Jones has achieved a batting average of .300, going 3-for-10 with three home runs in the early sessions. One standout moment occurred during a game against the Detroit Tigers when Jones hit a remarkable 408-foot home run at a speed of 111.7 mph. This swing prompted YES Network commentator David Cone to draw comparisons to Ohtani, citing its power and precision.

New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge has also taken notice of Jones’s adjustments. Judge commented, “The minute he puts that foot down with the little toe-tap, he’s ready to hit.” He highlighted that the changes in Jones’s swing mechanics could help mitigate previous struggles against high fastballs, suggesting that his readiness at the plate could significantly enhance his performance this season.

Consistency and Future Prospects

Since being drafted from Vanderbilt University in 2022 with a signing bonus of $2.8 million, Jones has displayed both impressive power and notable challenges at the plate. Last season, he hit 35 home runs and recorded 80 RBIs across 116 games in the minors, but also faced a striking 35.4 percent strikeout rate. This figure is particularly significant when compared to established hitters, such as Yankees third baseman Ryan McMahon, who led qualified MLB players with a 32.3 percent strikeout rate.

Jones has remained committed to improving his game. He kept in touch with Yankees hitting coaches throughout the offseason and arrived at the team’s player development complex a month before spring training commenced. Hitting coach Jake Hirst, now an assistant to primary hitting coach James Rowson, has been instrumental in Jones’s development, emphasizing the importance of a consistent swing for a player of his stature. “It just helps him time it up,” Hirst explained, noting that the toe-down approach could enhance Jones’s ability to control the strike zone.

As the Yankees finalize their roster, Jones is expected to begin the season at Triple-A, with established players like Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Trent Grisham occupying the starting outfield positions. The team also signed veteran Randal Grichuk to a minor-league deal, indicating their strategy to reinforce the outfield depth. Despite this, Jones remains a strong candidate for promotion should an opportunity arise due to injury or underperformance.

The Yankees organization is optimistic about Jones’s potential impact this season. Manager Aaron Boone remarked on the significance of players like Jones and fellow prospect Jasson Domínguez, noting their potential to influence the team’s success in the coming weeks.

In an era where comparisons often focus on physical attributes, Jones is eager to shift the narrative towards performance outcomes. “That was just a natural, great example to look at and for me to reference in the offseason,” he said, reflecting on the influence of Ohtani as he seeks to carve out his identity in Major League Baseball.
