NYC Snowstorm Hits Today: Up to 9 Inches Expected by Midnight
UPDATE: A powerful winter storm is set to strike New York City this afternoon, with snow beginning as early as 1 p.m. and intensifying through the evening. The Department of Sanitation warns that residents could face up to 9 inches of snow, making travel treacherous and prompting citywide preparations.
Snowfall is expected to be heaviest between 8 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday, with authorities urging New Yorkers to stay off the roads to facilitate snow removal operations. The Sanitation Department has mobilized its resources, deploying thousands of plow trucks and more than 700 salt spreaders across the city. Officials have 700 million pounds of salt ready to combat the storm’s impact.
In a proactive measure, city trash collectors will work extended shifts, handling post-holiday waste while also clearing the roads for safe travel. With the forecast indicating significant snowfall, additional city agencies, including the NYPD and the Departments of Transportation and Parks, may also assist in storm response efforts.
While it is customary for the mayor to hold weather briefings prior to major snowfalls, outgoing Mayor Adams has not scheduled a briefing for today. However, he has shared warnings about the inclement weather via his social media channels, emphasizing the need for caution.
As conditions deteriorate, residents are reminded to prepare for potential disruptions, including delays in public transport and hazardous road conditions. Authorities stress the importance of heeding safety advisories and remaining indoors during the storm’s peak.
Stay tuned for further updates as this developing story unfolds. New Yorkers are encouraged to share their experiences and stay informed through official channels.
