Phil Campbell, Legendary Motörhead Guitarist, Dies at 64
UPDATE: Phil Campbell, the iconic guitarist of heavy metal band Motörhead, has tragically passed away at the age of 64. His family confirmed the news on social media earlier today, revealing that he had been in intensive care following “a complex major operation.”
This loss is hitting metal fans hard as Campbell was a beloved figure in the music community known for his kindness and humor. “Phil was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud and loving grandfather, known affectionately as ‘Bampi,’” the family statement expressed. “He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be missed immensely.”
Campbell joined Motörhead in 1984 after being recruited by the band’s legendary frontman, Lemmy, following the departure of guitarist Brian Robertson. He became the band’s longest-serving guitarist, contributing to 16 studio albums over his 31 years with the group, including classic tracks like “Deaf Forever” and “Eat the Rich.”
Fellow musicians are mourning his passing. Motörhead drummer Mikkey Dee shared a heartfelt tribute, stating, “He was the funniest guy I have ever known and the best rock guitar player I have ever played with. His vibe and feel for rock music were outstanding.” Dee continued, expressing his deep sorrow and offering support to Campbell’s family. “Sleep well, my friend and rock soldier. Say hi to Lemmy,” he wrote.
Tributes are pouring in from across the music world. Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan called Campbell “one of the most kind and FUNNY humans out there” and expressed his heartbreak over the loss. “I will miss you, my friend and I still owe you a prank!” McKagan wrote.
Frank Bello of Anthrax reminisced about their time together on tour, saying, “Always had the best stories that made your day.” He recalled a memorable moment when they shared a drink during a Motörhead performance. “Rest in peace my friend—say hi to Lemmy,” Bello added.
Black Sabbath’s Geezer Butler also shared his condolences, recalling fond memories from their tours. “A truly nice man with a wicked sense of humor,” Butler said, highlighting the fun they had together.
