UConn Advances to Big East Championship with 67-51 Win Over Georgetown
UPDATE: The UConn Huskies have just secured a spot in the Big East Championship after a decisive 67-51 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas on March 15, 2024. Freshman sensation Braylon Mullins emerged as the star of the night, scoring 21 points and leading UConn’s offense at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Mullins, who had struggled with his shooting leading up to the game, showcased resilience and adaptability. Despite a rough start, he found ways to score, including a series of pull-up jumpers and impressive layups. “I came down, made my next two, and that got me into a flow in the first half,” Mullins stated, highlighting his determination amidst early setbacks.
The victory marks UConn’s 12th appearance in the Big East Championship and their second under Head Coach Dan Hurley. UConn is now 8-3 in Big East Championship games, solidifying their reputation as a formidable contender in the conference.
In a game characterized by a rocky start for both teams, UConn struggled with their three-point shooting, hitting just 2-for-12 in the first half. However, Mullins’ contributions were crucial in stabilizing the team. He became the first UConn freshman to score 20 points in a Big East Tournament game since Jerome Dyson in 2007.
Georgetown, fresh off an upset win against Villanova, could not replicate their earlier success, shooting a mere 12% from three-point range. Head Coach Ed Cooley expressed disappointment, stating, “We just couldn’t find the rhythm we had against Villanova.”
UConn’s bench also stepped up, contributing 20 points and proving vital in the absence of center Tarris Reed Jr., who faced foul trouble throughout the game. Reed managed to record five assists before being sidelined.
Looking ahead, UConn is set to face defending champions St. John’s in the championship game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The two teams last met in February, where UConn triumphed by a stunning 32 points. Coach Hurley knows the stakes are high, stating, “Expect them to come out to play hard. We just gotta prepare and recover.”
Fans are eagerly awaiting what promises to be an exhilarating showdown as UConn aims to claim the Big East title. The game will be broadcasted live on Fox, ensuring that supporters won’t miss a moment of the action.
