URGENT UPDATE: A crucial roundtable discussion titled “Should Boys Be Allowed to Compete in Girls’ Sports?” is set for 7 p.m. on March 14, 2024, at the Lynnwood Event Center, located at 3711 196th St. S.W., Lynnwood. This event, organized by Title IX Edmonds and Democrats for an Informed Approach to Gender, promises to be a pivotal moment in the ongoing debate over transgender athletes in school sports.

The discussion gains urgency as the controversial initiative measure IL26-638 heads for the ballot this fall. If passed, this measure would prohibit transgender girls—defined as individuals assigned male at birth—from participating with cisgender girls in athletic programs at K-12 schools across Washington. It would also require girls wishing to compete on female teams to provide documentation of their sex assigned at birth during physical exams.

Key speakers at this event include Amy Sousa, a women’s rights activist and gender abolitionist; Frances Staudt, a teenage athlete from Olympia who has publicly objected to competing against transgender players; Khush Brar, a school board director for the Lynden School District, which recently voted unanimously to support IL26-638; and Alesha Perkins, a parent active in educational transparency efforts. The event will be moderated by Jess Grant, founder of Title IX Edmonds.

The announcement stresses that the 1972 Federal Title IX law, designed to ensure equal treatment for girls in public schools, is under threat as state policymakers and local school districts create rules allowing males to compete in girls’ sports. The organizers seek to promote fair competition and end what they term “male encroachment” in female athletics.

As the debate intensifies, this event is expected to draw significant attention and participation. Tickets are currently available for purchase, and the discussion is poised to influence public opinion ahead of the ballot measure.

Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
