URGENT UPDATE: A powerful winter storm is hitting the East Coast, prompting winter storm warnings for four states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that areas could experience up to 4 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 60 mph, leading to dangerously low visibility and potential blizzard conditions.

As conditions develop rapidly, the NWS advises residents to prepare for severe weather. Those who must travel are urged to keep essential supplies like flashlights, non-perishable food, and water in their vehicles. The storm is expected to last until at least Sunday afternoon, creating hazardous conditions across the affected regions.

North Carolina is bracing for significant snowfall, particularly in the mountains, which could see up to 1 inch of snow. Areas in the eastern Piedmont, including the Sandhills and Coastal Plain, may receive up to 2 inches of snow combined with gusty winds of 35 mph. Counties like Duplin, Onslow, and Craven are forecasted to receive between 2 and 4 inches of snow, with local amounts possibly higher, leading to whiteout conditions that could make travel life-threatening.

In South Carolina, light snowfall and black ice are anticipated, particularly in the upstate, where roads are expected to become treacherous. Counties such as Allendale and Beaufort could see up to 4 inches of snow by Sunday morning. The NWS cautions that conditions will remain hazardous, especially along major roadways like Interstate 77.

Meanwhile, parts of Georgia are experiencing light snow and icy patches, particularly in counties such as Jenkins and Bulloch. These areas may see up to 3 inches of snow, with winds contributing to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

In Virginia, snow accumulation of up to 2 inches is expected in regions including south central and southwest Virginia. Wind gusts could reach 55 mph in some parts, creating dangerous travel conditions into Sunday evening.

Residents in all affected areas are advised to stay informed through local news updates and heed the warnings from the NWS. The combination of snow and high winds could lead to widespread disruptions and potential power outages.

As this storm progresses, stay tuned for further updates. Authorities emphasize that safety is paramount; if travel is not necessary, it is best to remain indoors during this severe weather event.
