UPDATE: The race for the Bay City Athlete of the Week is heating up as fans have until 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 5 to cast their votes! Each week during the 2026 high school winter sports season, standout athletes from basketball, bowling, cheer, gymnastics, hockey, swimming, and wrestling are recognized, and this week features some incredible talent.

LAYLA BOLZMAN from Unionville-Sebewaing is a formidable force, bringing her state champion track skills to the basketball court. The senior scored 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in recent victories over Laker and Saginaw Nouvel. Coach Joel Brinkman praised her quickness and leadership, noting she consistently pushes her team to excel.

In John Glenn, TATUM CARBENO has made a remarkable comeback from an ankle injury, now a vital player on the team. The sophomore guard played a crucial role, hitting a game-tying shot that forced overtime in a recent nail-biter against Bay City Western. Coach Dale Clyde highlighted her hard work and athleticism, essential to Glenn’s 10-4 record.

Next, KAIDEN DURUSSEL of the Bay City Wolves hockey team is proving age is just a number. The sophomore scored two goals in a thrilling 5-4 shootout victory against Chippewa Valley. Coach Zach Schalk commended his leadership and clutch performance under pressure.

The Garber girls basketball team is rising with ALLIE GAETH, a freshman who has quickly become one of the team’s top scorers. Gaeth recently showcased her skills with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 steals in a win against Bridgeport, earning accolades for her relentless effort and competitiveness.

In swimming, HUDSON GRANDY from Bay City Central is making waves. He recently qualified for state championships in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly at the Tri-Cities Championship. Coach Dave Staudacher noted that Grandy is a versatile swimmer, excelling in multiple events.

On the basketball court, JONATHAN KIRKPATRICK of All Saints is shining this season. His leadership has been pivotal, especially in a recent game against Akron-Fairgrove where he hit two clutch three-pointers. Coach Jason Brzezinski emphasized his growth as a player during his junior year.

The Pinconning girls bowling team relies heavily on their anchor, AUDREY SHOULTES, who has been delivering strong performances throughout the season. Ranked second in the Jack Pine Conference-2 with an average of 150.4, she rolled a high game of 201 recently, proving to be a key player during meets.

Wrestler E.J. SMITH from John Glenn is on a mission to dominate this season. A three-time Bay County champion, Smith recently achieved his 100th career win and is making strides against top-ranked opponents. Coach Matt Bishop commended his resilience and focus on future goals.

Finally, ADI WALKER from Standish-Sterling exemplifies toughness and leadership, crucial for her team’s success. As a senior, she has been instrumental in the Panthers’ impressive 11-1 record this season. Coach Denny Wendel praised her intelligence and ability to elevate her teammates’ performances.
