Bill MacKay to Showcase Unique Solo Performance in Yellow Springs
Bill MacKay, an acclaimed experimental folk artist, will bring his distinctive solo performance to Yellow Springs, Ohio, on February 28, 2024. The event will take place at the Herndon Gallery at Antioch College, starting at 19:00. MacKay’s music is characterized by a blend of genres and an improvisational style that has evolved over nearly two decades.
MacKay’s musical journey began at age 15 when he discovered the works of the Beat Generation, particularly the writings of Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs. Inspired by their artistic lifestyles, he began writing poetry late into the night, some of which later transformed into song lyrics. This early exposure solidified his commitment to pursuing a life in the arts.
Since releasing his debut album, Esker, in 2017 under the independent label Drag City, MacKay has continued to expand his discography. His latest album, Locust Land, released in 2024, showcases his ongoing evolution as an artist. MacKay’s work is marked by collaborations across various musical styles, creating a genre-bending sound rooted in experimental folk, rock, and avant-garde traditions.
The performance in Yellow Springs will also feature the Dayton-based percussion duo Neutrals, known for their drone and noise-based improvisations. This will add an intriguing layer to the evening, complementing MacKay’s melodic and often instrumental repertoire.
MacKay describes his creative process as one that often involves waiting for inspiration to strike. He emphasizes the importance of melody, stating, “If you have a melody that speaks to you or is powerful to you, you could put endless scores of words to it.” His approach can be meticulous; he has waited years to find the right complement for a melody, illustrating his commitment to artistic integrity.
Collaboration plays a significant role in MacKay’s work. He has partnered with notable musicians such as cellist Katinka Kleijn and fellow artist Ryley Walker, contributing to a diverse body of work that includes albums like SpiderBeetleBee and Hypnotic Pulse of the Reindeer Range. He is also the founder of several bands, including Sounds of Now and Darts & Arrows.
In his solo performances, MacKay opts for a minimalist setup, avoiding the use of looping pedals or drum machines. He relies on his guitar, a small effects board, and an amplifier to create a raw and intimate sound. “I don’t not play something live just because it was done with a lot of tracks,” he noted. His focus lies on capturing the essence of each song and conveying its melody and feel.
