Houston NICU’s Human Milk Fortifier Cuts Deadly Gut Disease Rates

At St. Joseph Medical Center’s downtown neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Houston, Texas, a strategic shift in nutritional practices has significantly reduced the incidence of a life-threatening gut disease in premature infants. The introduction of a human milk–based fortifier has led to a dramatic drop in cases of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) from as high as 11% to below 1% this year. NICU nurse manager Angela Hermes emphasized the importance of this change, stating, “We can take care of 29 babies here in our NICU,” underlining the profound impact on families facing the challenges of prematurity.

The Chief Nursing Officer, Vincent Gore, attributed the significant decline in NEC cases to the introduction of this new fortifier. Hospital officials highlighted that the focus is on preventing complications associated with prematurity, rather than simply reacting after infants become ill.

Human milk–based fortifiers serve as concentrated supplements that enhance the nutritional intake of premature infants. These products increase calories, protein, and minerals while eliminating cow-milk proteins often found in traditional fortifiers. Prolacta Bioscience, the partner organization, specializes in 100% human milk–based products and has documented significant reductions in NEC rates in hospitals that have adopted exclusive human milk diets.

The Risks Associated with Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Necrotizing enterocolitis primarily affects premature and very low birth-weight infants, posing serious health risks that can escalate quickly to bowel perforation, sepsis, and even death.
