James Earl Powers, Celebrated Journalist and Pickleball Enthusiast, Dies at 68

James Earl Powers passed away peacefully at home on December 9, 2025, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. He was 68 years old. Known affectionately as “Jim,” he was surrounded by loved ones during his final moments, leaving behind cherished memories and a deep impact on those who knew him.

Born on July 11, 1957, in Illinois, Jim spent his formative years in Wilmette. He grew up in a close-knit family with siblings who instilled in him a passion for Chicago sports, particularly the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. His loyalty to these teams remained steadfast throughout his life, reflecting his deep roots in the Windy City.

A Passion for Journalism and Education

Jim graduated from New Trier East High School in 1975 and pursued further education at Illinois State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1979. He later completed a Master’s in Education from Grand Canyon University in 2002. His love for sports not only fueled his personal interests but also shaped his professional path. He began his journalism career at the Des Plaines Journal and steadily contributed to various publications, including U-Haul International, Sun-Times Media Group, and ultimately, Palm Springs Life.

In November 2022, Jim retired from Palm Springs Life, concluding a fulfilling career in publishing. Shortly thereafter, he took a part-time role at Acrisure Arena, where he enjoyed watching the Coachella Valley Firebirds and numerous musical performances. His brief retirement also included a memorable trip to Costa Rica.

A Life of Active Engagement and Community

Beyond writing, Jim was passionate about sports, particularly pickleball. He became a well-known figure in the local pickleball community, organizing leagues and tournaments while introducing many to the sport. His enthusiasm for pickleball was matched only by his love for the Star Wars franchise, which became a significant part of his identity.

Jim’s personal life was equally rich. He shared a loving partnership with Harry Davis for over 11 years. He is survived by his sister, Judy Peelo, and her family; his brother, William “Bill” Powers, and his family; his sister, Janis Benzuly, with her children; and his brother, Chris Powers, and his daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Warren Powers, and his beloved dog, Zoë, who passed away in 2021 after nearly 15 years together.
