Respiratory illnesses are on the rise in Brainerd and surrounding areas, prompting Essentia Health to expand its same-day and virtual care options. With an increase in cases, the healthcare provider encourages patients to seek appropriate care that aligns with their symptoms. This initiative aims to ensure timely treatment while keeping emergency departments available for critical cases.

The Minnesota Department of Health reported over 5,100 cases of influenza statewide as of December 21, 2023. This figure marks a significant rise compared to fewer than 1,900 cases just two weeks earlier. The surge in respiratory infections, including influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), is placing additional strain on healthcare resources.

Choosing the Right Level of Care

Patients experiencing non-emergency symptoms are urged to consider alternative care options. According to research, around one in three visits to emergency departments are for conditions that do not require immediate attention. Christie Erickson, a nurse practitioner and associate chief medical officer for Essentia’s East Market, highlighted the importance of choosing the right care to avoid overwhelming emergency services.

Essentia Health offers several avenues for patients, including:

– **24/7 Video Visit On Demand**: Accessible through the MyChart patient portal for urgent needs.
– **E-Visit**: Online consultations available 24/7 via MyChart for common ailments.
– **Primary Care or Virtual Video Visit**: Recommended for illnesses such as cold symptoms, flu, sore throat, eye redness, nausea, vomiting, ear pain, or rashes.
– **Urgent Care or Walk-In Care**: Appropriate for low-grade fevers, migraines, mild but ongoing nausea, and persistent coughs.

For serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe pain, or sudden numbness, individuals should seek immediate attention at an emergency department.

Staying Informed and Healthy

Essentia Health advises those feeling unwell to utilize resources such as the Essentia Nurse Care Line at 800-714-4646 or visit the Essentia Health same-day care webpage for guidance. The healthcare provider has developed tools to help patients determine the best course of action based on their symptoms.

“We have a number of ways to ensure our patients receive the right level of care, based on their symptoms,” said Erickson. “These include same-day options so we can get you in right away. We’re experiencing an especially challenging flu season, and we want to do everything we can to keep people healthy and out of the hospital.”

In Fargo specifically, approximately 15% of emergency department visits over the past week were attributed to influenza. As respiratory illnesses continue to rise, it is crucial for individuals to understand their options and seek timely care to alleviate the pressures on healthcare systems.
