Bengaluru Cafe Launches Vegan South Indian Cuisine in Philadelphia
A new South Indian restaurant, Bengaluru Cafe, is set to open in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood by the end of March 2024. The cafe, owned by Sri Saravanan, will be located at 809 N. 2nd St. and marks an expansion from its successful establishment in Fairfax, Virginia. Saravanan expressed confidence in Philadelphia as a strategic location for growth, citing the area’s vibrant downtown and accessibility as appealing factors.
Inspired by Bengaluru, the capital of India’s southern Karnataka state, the cafe will offer an entirely vegan and vegetarian menu, a first for the city. The menu features authentic dishes from the region, including a variety of chaats, appetizers, and shareable plates. Notable items include the tomato masala salad and vada pav, a popular Indian street food that consists of a spicy potato fritter served with soft pav bread and tangy chutneys.
Menu Highlights and Beverage Offerings
Dosas, a staple of South Indian cuisine, will also be a highlight at Bengaluru Cafe. Customers can choose from options like the masala dosa, filled with spiced potatoes, or the Mysore masala dosa, which includes a layer of spicy red chutney. Complementing the food offerings, the cafe will serve a selection of milkshakes, fresh juices, South Indian filter coffee, and masala chai, providing classic beverage pairings for the dishes.
The interior of Bengaluru Cafe aims to create a garden-like atmosphere, reminiscent of its namesake city. Saravanan has incorporated natural elements such as bamboo lighting and wooden furniture to enhance the ambiance. “Bengaluru is a garden city of India, so we brought in a little bit of a garden atmosphere with a greenery look,” he said.
Looking Ahead to Philadelphia
Saravanan is enthusiastic about entering the Philadelphia market and connecting with the local community. He noted the diverse customer base, which includes both families and tourists, and emphasized the importance of understanding the local demographics. “We are excited to open and go live,” Saravanan remarked, highlighting the anticipation surrounding the cafe’s debut.
Bengaluru Cafe aims to establish itself as a destination for those seeking authentic South Indian vegan cuisine. As the opening approaches, interested patrons can visit the cafe’s website and follow its social media accounts for updates. With its commitment to quality and authenticity, Bengaluru Cafe looks poised to make a significant impact in Philadelphia’s culinary landscape.
