Coastal Retreat in Longport Blends Timeless Elegance and Comfort
A new coastal retreat in Longport, New Jersey, captures the essence of classic beach homes, reminiscent of Cape Cod. Designed by Dana Bergman and Erica Vassalotti of the design studio Bergman Vass, this project combines the elegance of a timeless residence with the relaxed charm of a beach house. The homeowners sought a space that would serve as a welcoming haven for their blended family and future grandchildren, reflecting their spirit and energy.
The design process was highly collaborative, with the couple sharing their vision for a home that felt both classic and soulful. One unexpected source of inspiration emerged from a simple yet elegant white cotton shirt dress worn by the client during a meeting. This dress helped shape the project’s color palette and overall aesthetic, setting the tone for a blend of casual and sophisticated style.
Creating a Unique Coastal Atmosphere
Unlike traditional beach houses that often rely on nautical motifs, the design team focused on materials and textures that evoke the coastal environment without being clichéd. “Our aim was to create a home that felt unmistakably connected to the shore, but never themed,” Erica explains. Elements such as cane, oak, washed linens, soft blues, and sandy neutrals create a refined atmosphere that feels both lived-in and polished.
Upon entering, visitors are welcomed into a spacious family room that offers stunning views of the ocean. The room’s design mirrors the coastal palette, featuring light colors and natural textures. A clam-shaped pendant light from Soane serves as a subtle nod to the seaside. “We wanted the home to feel serene, not staged, so every room blends comfort with craftsmanship,” Dana adds, highlighting the custom woodworking and vintage pieces throughout the space.
The family room stands out with its custom pool table, cane cabinetry, and checkerboard marble floors, which add to the home’s unique character. Each room is designed to integrate seamlessly with the stunning coastal views, ensuring the sea remains a focal point.
A Blend of Modern and Timeless Features
The kitchen exemplifies the project’s design philosophy. Initially intended to be understated with a quiet stone surface, the clients opted for a statement Danby marble countertop. This decision marked a pivotal moment in the design process, tying the home’s aesthetic to the coastal environment while introducing a sense of age and patina. Dana and Erica note that such surprising choices enriched the home’s overall character.
Despite being a new build, the residence boasts unique architectural details and carefully crafted millwork. “Elements like arched bookcases and hidden storage add both uniqueness and function,” Erica explains. The integration of vintage pieces from various sources worldwide provides a collected look that enhances the home’s charm without leaning too heavily on coastal themes.
The design team sourced materials from renowned suppliers, including Rose Tarlow, C&C Milano, and Bonacina. Notable finds include vintage table lamps from Hudson, New York, and a custom pool table made from white oak. Dana highlights the importance of layering textures and natural materials to create depth and warmth within the home.
The overall aesthetic is described by the designers as “neutral, layered, and timeless,” encapsulating a coastal feel that remains elegant and inviting. Dana and Erica emphasize their commitment to creating spaces that will remain beautiful for years to come, focusing on enduring materials rather than overt coastal patterns.
Ultimately, this coastal retreat in Longport stands as a testament to thoughtful design, blending modern comforts with classic sophistication. The result is a home that not only reflects the family’s history but also offers a timeless sanctuary for generations to come.
