Jefferson County Chamber Celebrates Community Leaders at Annual Awards
The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce recognized exceptional community members during its 105th Annual Awards Press Conference on March 12, 2024, at the Innovation Hub in Mount Vernon, Illinois. The event showcased individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the local community, with awards spanning various categories.
Tony Wielt, owner of State Farm Insurance, was named the Small Business Person of the Year. The announcement came as a surprise during the press conference, where Wielt was selected from a competitive pool that included James Mount of Meagher Pest Control and Ryan Storey of Pyramid Powder Coating. Wielt expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the importance of community support in sustaining small businesses.
“The Chamber has been very, very good to me and our business,” Wielt said. He also highlighted the role of his team, stating, “The staying power is not just the name on the door; it’s what’s within the door too.”
The Citizen of the Year honor went to Lynn Lenker, who was recognized for her extensive volunteer work, including her role with Angels on Assignment. Although Lenker could not attend the press conference, she later expressed her surprise and appreciation for the award. “Getting involved in the community is important,” Lenker remarked.
The Young Professionals of the Year award was shared by brothers Hayden and Hunter England, co-owners of the Twisted Twins restaurant. While Hayden accepted the award, Hunter was unable to attend due to work commitments. Hayden emphasized the value of support from local programs and the community for young entrepreneurs.
At the same event, Allie Sweeten and Anna Bousman were named the Students of the Year. Both high school seniors demonstrated outstanding leadership and academic achievement. Sweeten is involved in various extracurricular activities, while Bousman serves as class president and is recognized as an Illinois State Scholar. Both plan to continue their education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE).
The Chamber also honored Theresa McMahon with the Ambassador of the Year award. McMahon thanked her colleagues for the recognition and reflected on her 30-year journey with the Chamber, highlighting the importance of community relationships.
The President’s Award was presented to Rex Cusumano, who has a long history of community involvement through his family business, Cusumano & Sons, Inc. “Thank you very much to the Past Presidents,” Cusumano said, encouraging attendees to learn more about his experiences at the upcoming banquet.
Lastly, GFI Digital, represented by Scott Stine, received the Friend of the Chamber award for its ongoing support of local initiatives, including the Chamber’s Teacher of the Month program.
The awards will be formally presented at the Chamber’s 105th Annual Awards Banquet on March 24, 2024. The event will begin with a cocktail hour at 17:30, followed by the main program at 18:00. For more details, individuals can contact the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.
This annual event not only highlights the accomplishments of its awardees but also reinforces the Chamber’s commitment to fostering a vibrant community through collaboration and support.
