Residents of Schuylkill County are invited to participate in a variety of engaging community events throughout January and February 2024. From outdoor activities to educational programs, there are numerous opportunities for individuals and families to connect with each other and nature.

Upcoming Outdoor Events

On January 17, the Frog Hollow Nature Center in Friedensburg will host the Night Owl Prowl from 18:00 to 19:00. Led by birding expert Dave Kruel, participants will explore the local owl populations. Attendees should dress warmly, wear sturdy footwear, and bring a flashlight, as pets are not permitted. Interested individuals can reach out to Kruel at 570-640-1184 for more information.

Later in February, the Schuylkill Conservation District will lead a Locust Lake Loop walk on February 19 at 13:00. This 1-mile walk will follow an easy, mostly paved path, welcoming children and dogs. On February 22 at 14:00, the Landingville Marsh Meander will take hikers along the historic John Bartram Trail, which features remnants of the oldest transportation tunnel in America, constructed in 1827. This hike is approximately 2 miles long and is also family-friendly, although dogs are not allowed.

A special children’s event, the Lorax Led Walk, is scheduled for March 1 at 14:00. This celebration of World Reading Day and Dr. Seuss Day will focus on local trees and their history. Participants can gather at the Sweet Arrow Lake Waterfall Pavilion Parking Lot. Families with well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Library Programs and Workshops

For those interested in literary pursuits, the Orwigsburg Library will host a discussion of “Diary of a Dying Girl” by Mallory Smith on January 26 at 17:30. Additionally, on February 7 at 12:30, the library’s Recipe Club will gather to share dishes themed “Cook with Love,” although space is limited, and prior registration is necessary.

In collaboration with Penn State Schuylkill, a three-part series titled “Everyday AI for Business” will be offered on February 18, 25, and March 4 from 11:30 to 13:00. This series aims to help participants understand, utilize, and lead with AI in business contexts. Registration is required and includes a complimentary light lunch.

Another noteworthy event is a remote session, “LinkedIn for Startups & Marketers,” taking place on February 18 at 18:00 via Zoom. This program is part of ongoing initiatives at Penn State Schuylkill and can be explored further through the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce.
