Beloved Matriarch Janice Gibson Cartwright Passes Away at 86

Janice Gibson Cartwright, a cherished matriarch and community leader, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, at the age of 86. Surrounded by her loving family, including her husband of 62 years, John Cartwright, and their three daughters, she left behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and devotion.

Early Life and Education

Born on December 15, 1938, in Zion, Illinois, Jan was raised in a small Wisconsin town. From a young age, she exhibited a remarkable determination. She became the only girl in her high school class to pursue higher education, moving to the bustling city of Madison to attend the University of Wisconsin. It was here she met John, marking the beginning of a partnership that would last over six decades.

After earning her degree, Jan began her career as a home economics teacher in San Diego. She played a crucial role in supporting John as he embarked on his financial planning career. Their first daughter, Beth, was born shortly thereafter, prompting the family to relocate to Palos Verdes, California.

A Life of Service and Leadership

In Palos Verdes, Jan dedicated herself to raising her daughters, Beth, Pam, and Sarah. Her commitment extended beyond her family as she became actively involved in various community organizations, including the National Charity League, Girl Scouts, and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). Over the years, she became known for her warmth, energy, and quiet leadership, drawing people together and inspiring them to contribute to their community.

Jan was not only a devoted mother but also a significant partner in her husband’s financial planning enterprise. Together, they built a respected broker-dealer firm that laid a strong foundation for their family’s financial success. Her influence and hard work played a vital role in establishing the business’s reputation in the industry.

Throughout her life, Jan was characterized by her kindness, humor, and unwavering support for her family. Friends and acquaintances often remarked on her ability to bring comfort and understanding to those around her, making her a beloved figure in her community.

Jan is survived by her husband, John; her daughters, Beth Carr, Pam Eckenrode, and Sarah Ehmann; eight grandchildren; her brother, Jim Gibson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Evelyn Gibson; her brother, Jack Gibson; and her sister, Pam Gibson Webster.
