Community Remembers Sally Ann Sprout Mallard for Her Kindness

Sally Ann Sprout Mallard, a beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, surrounded by her family. She was 89 years old, having been born on September 8, 1936, to Melba Pauline Savage Sprout and Ralph Edgar Sprout. Sally is remembered for her warmth, kindness, and dedication to her family and community.

Raised in Torrance, California, Sally attended local schools where she met her future husband, Clayton Mallard, in the 10th grade. They married on August 5, 1956, and celebrated an impressive 69 years of marriage. Together, Sally and Clay built a family and a life filled with love and shared experiences.

Throughout her life, Sally excelled in various domestic skills, including sewing, cooking, and home decoration. She had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcomed, whether hosting family gatherings or tending to her home. The couple moved frequently due to Clay’s job, living in places such as Atlanta, Georgia, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before settling in Fallbrook, California, in 2002. Despite these relocations, Sally maintained strong connections with friends old and new.

Sally’s legacy extends beyond her family. She was actively involved in her church community and was known for her thoughtfulness and generosity. A passionate bridge player, she taught the game in Iowa and participated in local bridge groups throughout her life, including at the Fallbrook Senior Center until recently.

The couple’s retirement allowed them more time to engage in activities they loved. Sally took up tennis in her thirties and enjoyed playing at the Fallbrook Tennis Club, where she formed lasting friendships. She often reflected on the highlights of her life, particularly the births of her four daughters and the weddings of her children.

A particularly memorable occasion was her 50th wedding anniversary, where she celebrated with family and friends, including a visit from Leonora Costales-Cabesa, an Ecuadorian student who lived with the family in the late 1970s. Sally orchestrated many joyful gatherings, creating cherished memories through holiday dinners, baby showers, and other celebrations.

Sally is survived by her husband, Clayton; daughters Rebecca Mallard (Debbie), Gwendolyn Wilson, Jennifer Artunian (Mike), and Cynthia Swift (Larry); as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind three sisters, Peggy Olivier, Jeannie Beard, and Linda Redderson, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service in her honor will take place on January 3, 2026, at 11 AM at Christ the King Church in Fallbrook. Sally Ann Sprout Mallard’s spirit, marked by love and friendship, will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
