Remembering Jack Brown: A Life of Family, Community, and Service

John (Jack) Paul Brown, aged 92, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, in San Pedro, California, surrounded by his loving family. Jack’s life was marked by a deep connection to his community and a strong commitment to his family, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and dedication.

A Life Rooted in Community and Family

Born on March 10, 1933, in Long Beach, California, to Robert and Agnes Brown, Jack grew up in San Pedro. His childhood was filled with fond memories, including catching tadpoles at Averill Park and selling newspapers to sailors arriving at the port. Jack’s early experiences also included working as one of the first employees at Helen Grace Chocolates and assisting his father as a Civilian Air Warden during World War II.

Jack attended Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, he would take a ferry across the harbor to reach school. Active and athletic, Jack excelled in track and field, earning numerous accolades as a distance runner during his high school years. He continued his passion for running while pursuing a degree in Drafting at college.

A Career of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

After completing his education, Jack embarked on a career at Northrop Grumman, where he contributed to various projects. Later, he launched his own business, employing friends and colleagues he met throughout his journey, showcasing his commitment to fostering community and camaraderie.

In 1969, Jack met Rita Cebula, the love of his life. They married on April 17, 1971, and together welcomed two children: Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975. Family was central to Jack’s life; he and Rita were actively involved in their church, with Rita teaching at Holy Trinity for 25 years.

Jack cherished family vacations and enjoyed hobbies such as gardening, DIY projects, and coin collecting. Known for his unique sense of humor, he delighted in making others laugh. Each day began for him with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and a keen interest in the stock market.

Jack leaves behind his beloved children, Dennis and Julie, and grandchildren Natalie and Vincent. He is also survived by his sister Agnes Welsh and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Rita, parents Robert and Agnes, brother Robert, sister Phyllis Smith, and nephews Bob and Tom Smith.
