Remembering Jack Brown: A Life Rich in Family and Community

John (Jack) Paul Brown, aged 92, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, surrounded by his family in San Pedro, California. A beloved figure in his community, Jack’s life was marked by a deep commitment to family, a strong work ethic, and a passion for sports.

Early Life and Education

Born on March 10, 1933, in Long Beach, California, Jack was the son of Robert and Agnes Brown. His childhood was filled with fond memories of San Pedro, where he often caught tadpoles at Averill Park and sold newspapers to sailors arriving in port. Jack began his first job as one of the inaugural employees at Helen Grace Chocolates and assisted his father as a Civilian Air Warden during World War II.

Jack attended Mary Star of the Sea Elementary School and graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. Before the construction of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, he took a ferry across the harbor to reach school. A standout athlete, Jack excelled as a distance runner on the Track and Field team, earning numerous accolades for his performances. He continued his athletic pursuits in college while studying Drafting.

Career and Family Life

Following his graduation, Jack began his career at Northrop Grumman. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own business, where he employed friends and colleagues he had met throughout his career. In 1969, he met Rita Cebula, the love of his life. The couple married on April 17, 1971, and welcomed their children, Dennis in 1972 and Julie in 1975.

Jack and Rita were actively involved in their church community, with Rita dedicating 25 years to teaching at Holy Trinity Church. Jack cherished family vacations and enjoyed hobbies such as gardening, sports, and DIY projects. He was also an avid coin collector and had a unique sense of humor that brought joy to those around him. Every morning, Jack started his day with a cup of coffee, a crossword puzzle, and a keen interest in the stock market.

He is survived by his children, Dennis and Julie, along with grandchildren Natalie and Vincent, and his sister Agnes Welsh. Jack also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rita, his parents Robert and Agnes, his brother Robert, his sister Phyllis Smith, and nephews Bob and Tom Smith.

Memorial Service
