NFL Declines Proposal to Ban Controversial ‘Tush Push’ Play

The National Football League (NFL) will not ban the controversial quarterback sneak known as the “tush push,” as no teams submitted a proposal for its removal before the deadline this year. NFL executive Troy Vincent confirmed this during the scouting combine held in Indianapolis. While the league may still consider modifying rules regarding player pushing and pulling, the absence of proposals indicates that the play will remain a part of the game for now.

The Philadelphia Eagles have effectively utilized the tush push to great success, particularly with Jalen Hurts at quarterback and a formidable offensive line. Following the Eagles’ victory in the 2024 Super Bowl, the Green Bay Packers introduced a rule change proposal aimed at prohibiting players from pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or encircling a runner. This proposal garnered support from 22 of the league’s 32 franchises but ultimately fell short by just two votes.

On March 5, 2025, Brian Gutekunst, general manager of the Packers, stated at the combine that the team would not pursue another ban on the tush push. “And nobody’s reached out to us about doing it,” Gutekunst said, indicating a shift in focus among teams.

While the Eagles found success with the play in prior seasons, their effectiveness diminished in 2025. Coach Nick Sirianni acknowledged that rival teams had developed strategies to counter the play. “We either have to get back to being able to be as dominant as we were at it, or we find new avenues to be able to convert on third down or in the red zone,” he said. The offseason presents opportunities for innovation and re-evaluation of tactics.

The NFL has also instructed officials to tighten enforcement on false starts from the tight formation, leading to complaints that officiating the tush push has become increasingly challenging. Despite a growing sentiment to reconsider the ban this offseason, no formal proposal has materialized.

Last year, discussions surrounding the safety of the tush push heightened, with some detractors advocating for its elimination due to health concerns. Nevertheless, data from the NFL indicated that no injuries had occurred as a direct result of the play. Sean Payton, head coach of the Denver Broncos and a member of the NFL’s Competition Committee, remarked on the contradiction of the league’s focus, saying, “Last year, we spent two hours on health and safety on the (tush push) and then added 1,000 kickoffs. Which play do you think is more of a health risk?”

Echoing these sentiments, John Lynch, the 49ers general manager and fellow Competition Committee member, noted that the situation may resolve itself, suggesting that the play’s future could depend on evolving strategies rather than strict regulations.

As teams continue to explore their options, the future of the tush push remains uncertain. For now, it stands as a testament to the ongoing evolution of strategy in the NFL, where each season brings new challenges and opportunities for teams looking to gain an edge on the field.
