Ravens Outline Offseason Strategy at NFL Scouting Combine

The Baltimore Ravens are sharpening their focus on key offseason priorities as they navigate the upcoming months leading to the NFL draft and free agency. During the NFL Scouting Combine held in Indianapolis, general manager Eric DeCosta and first-year head coach Jesse Minter addressed challenges surrounding quarterback Lamar Jackson’s contract, the team’s pass rush, and the overall roster construction.

One of the most pressing concerns for the Ravens is Jackson’s contract, which carries a projected salary cap hit of $74.5 million in 2026—making it the second-largest in the league, following Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. This substantial figure significantly impacts the team’s ability to make moves in free agency. Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has expressed a strong desire to secure Jackson’s future with the team, emphasizing the urgency of finalizing negotiations before the critical free agency period begins on March 9, 2024.

DeCosta acknowledged that discussions with Jackson remain private but confirmed his ongoing communication with the quarterback. “I have spoken to Lamar about a lot of different things over the last month,” DeCosta remarked. Despite the looming contract, he downplayed concerns that Jackson’s cap number would hinder the Ravens from making necessary roster improvements. “We feel like we can start at the beginning of the new league year and conduct business,” he added.

Prioritizing Key Players

While the situation with Jackson is pivotal, the Ravens are also working to secure a long-term deal with center Tyler Linderbaum. DeCosta revealed that the team has made Linderbaum a “market-setting offer,” highlighting his importance to the offensive line. “Tyler is a guy that I have tremendous respect for,” DeCosta stated, noting that retaining Linderbaum is crucial for continuity under Minter’s new offensive strategy.

Minter echoed this sentiment, calling Linderbaum “one of the best interior linemen in the league” and an essential component of their offensive structure. The Ravens have opted not to use the franchise or transition tag on Linderbaum, who was a first-round pick in 2022. As the team navigates free agency, Linderbaum’s new contract offer is expected to exceed the current highest average annual salary for centers, which stands at $18 million.

Addressing Defensive Weaknesses

Another critical area of focus for the Ravens is improving their pass rush, which was noticeably ineffective during the previous season. The team finished with just 30 sacks, ranking among the bottom three in the league. DeCosta acknowledged the need for enhancement, stating, “We certainly know that we have to augment the pass rush and improve there.”

The Ravens’ struggles were exacerbated by the season-ending injury to defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike, who suffered a neck injury early in the season. As the team prepares for the draft, they are armed with 11 picks, positioning themselves well to target pass rush talent in a draft class considered deep in defensive prospects.
