Tel Aviv Students Embrace Learning and Community at UTulsa
Two doctoral students from Tel Aviv University, Dana Itzhaki and Noa Barnir, recently completed a transformative year at The University of Tulsa (UTulsa), where they immersed themselves in the field of cybersecurity economics. Their journey, driven by a desire for discovery, has not only expanded their academic horizons but also allowed them to form meaningful connections within the local community.
During their time at UTulsa, both scholars received mentorship from Neil Gandal, Ph.D., the applied distinguished professor of cyber studies. He encouraged them to engage with top experts and explore diverse cybersecurity theories. This collaboration has included several joint research projects between Tel Aviv University and UTulsa, enriching their academic experience.
Research and Collaboration Flourish
The dynamic environment at UTulsa has fostered significant academic growth for both Itzhaki and Barnir. They have actively participated in discussions with faculty and fellow students, gaining valuable insights into their field. Tyler Moore, Ph.D., Tandy Endowed Chair in Cyber Security and Information Assurance, provided daily mentorship, facilitating their collaboration with other doctoral students on various projects.
Barnir expressed her appreciation for the unique multidisciplinary approach at the School of Cyber Studies. “This environment was very educational for me, not only through discussions with the professors but also by learning from other Ph.D. students,” she stated. “I am sure that the collaboration we began during the visit will lead to future joint research.”
Their stay in Tulsa offered more than just academic enrichment. The welcoming atmosphere of the city and the university created a sense of belonging. Both students noted the vibrancy of campus activities and local events, which significantly contributed to their positive experience.
Impact on Personal and Professional Growth
Reflecting on their time in Tulsa, Barnir remarked, “My time in Tulsa was inspiring both professionally and personally. I returned to Israel with many new ideas and connections that continue to influence my research.” Itzhaki echoed these sentiments, sharing that she and her family had a wonderful experience in the city. “It is a warm, welcoming, and peaceful city, and we genuinely enjoyed our time there,” she said. “We were sad to leave. My children keep saying they would love to come back.”
Since returning to Israel, Itzhaki has continued her joint research with renewed clarity and is already developing new projects that emerged from her experiences at UTulsa. Gandal emphasized the strengths that each group of students brings to the table. “There are strong synergies between students here and in Israel,” he noted. The combination of the Tel Aviv students’ backgrounds in economics and data analysis with UTulsa students’ expertise in computer science has led to the establishment of several joint initiatives.
As the collaboration continues, Gandal is optimistic about the potential outcomes. “I expect that many excellent articles will come out of the collaboration, which will continue beyond the time in Tulsa,” he said.
The University of Tulsa’s College of Engineering & Computer Science offers a comprehensive range of programs in cybersecurity, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees, along with a doctorate in cyber studies. For more information, visit utulsa.edu/cyber.
